V2 Gate valves are fundamental to many industries, from oil and gas drilling to water treatment processes. Their versatility and dependability make them an essential component in countless applications. These valves are designed to control the flow of materials, primarily fluids, within a pipe by allowing or halting their movement. In the oil and natural gas drilling industry, gate valves play a critical role in ensuring that the operation runs smoothly and safely. With the ability to withstand extreme pressure and maintain reliability, these valves are vital in various industries.
Drillmax® is an industry-leading manufacturer of blue drill pipe float valves, mud gate valves, and shear relief valves. Keep reading to learn more about gate valves and their common function and applications.
WHAT IS A GATE VALVE?
Gate valves are designed to stop or allow fluid to pass from one location to another. The closure on a gate valve is a disc (or gate) that rises on the base of a threaded stem or spindle into the valve top. The valve opens or closes by turning the spindle, either starting or stopping the flow. They differ from other valves in that they work most effectively by being either fully open or closed. Gate valves are used in pipelines to isolate pipe segments, not to regulate the flow.
Gate valves are available in multiple sizes, materials, and pressure classes, with the maximum pressure defined by your application. Material choices vary per application.
COMMON GATE VALVE APPLICATIONS
There are numerous applications for gate valves, but you will find them primarily where fluids are transported through pipes. They are used when minimal pressure loss and a free-flow bore are required.
Gate valves are used in liquid applications, including potable water and wastewater. Any manufacturing or mechanical process that moves fluids from one area to another, likely uses gate valves, including but not limited to the following industries:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Automotive
- Food
- Marine
Gate valves are used on ships, mud pumps for oil and gas drilling applications, and other areas with limited space. Most gate valves are made from steel or iron, but some industrial usage may require specific construction materials such as stainless steel, bronze, or high alloys.
DRILLMAX® DEMCO® DM STYLE GATE VALVES (MUD VALVES)
Drillmax® DEMCO® DM Style Gate Valves (also called “mud valves”) provide strength and pressure resistance specific to modern oilfield applications. They are designed for a tight seal with every closing cycle and withstand typical high-pressure demands in deep well drilling. Our gate valves operate efficiently and offer in-line repairability, which makes routine service and repairs easier.
Drillmax® DEMCO® DM Style Gate Valves come in three straightforward configurations and are available in 5000 psi and 7500 psi:
FLANGED END CONNECTIONS
When using the Drillmax® Demco® flanged end connection, you will not have to turn or weld the valve. The flanges are connected to the matching pipe flanges with nuts and bolts.
THREADED END CONNECTIONS
Our threaded end connections (also called “screwed ends”) can be used for applications up to 5000 psi.
BUTT WELD END CONNECTIONS
Butt weld end connections on the Drillmax® DEMCO® DM Style Gate Valves are manufactured to match the pipe weld connection. The ends are butted together and welded in place. Best when used in areas where frequent removals are not needed.
